Donburi is a classic Japanese dish , usually made with beef tenderloin. It is a sweet, salty dish which is a hot favourite with kids. You can use your choice of meat.
Protein - Beef / Chicken
Serves - 4-5
1kg of chicken or beef (sliced thinly)
1/4 cup soya sauce
1/4 cup sake (or sweet white wine)- optional
1 tbsp oil
2 tsp MA's minced ginger
1 tsp sugar (I usually use a tablespoon of honey as it gives a nice glaze to the meat)
1/2 tsp MA's minced garlic
2 finely chopped leeks
I medium sized onion sliced
Marinate beef with soy sauce ,sake, oil, chopped ginger, sugar and garlic for at least an hour, stirring occasionally.
In a saucepan with a tablespoon of oil cook onions and leeks till soft, add the meat mixture and let the meat tenderise. Be careful not to overlook as the soy sauce will give a bitter taste. The meat shouldn't take more than 10-15 mins - which is why it needs to be thinly sliced.
Serve this mixture over a bowl of steamed rice, making sure that the marinade that you have cooked in has been absorbed by rice as well whilst serving. Garnish with toasted sesame seeds and pickled ginger.
If you are sending this for lunch to school / office , pack in a stainless steel tiffin so that you can pack hot rice.
